Candle Care & Safety Notes

A Note from the Studio

Candles bring a quiet glow, a soft scent, and a feeling of calm to everyday life. These candle care and safety recommendations are meant to help you enjoy every burn—beautifully, cleanly, and with confidence from first light to final flicker.

First Burn: Setting the Tone

  • Allow your candle to burn until the melted wax reaches close to the edges of the jar on the first burn (usually 2–3 hours). This helps create an even “memory” and reduces tunneling.
  • Place your candle on a stable, heat-safe surface away from drafts, open windows, or vents.
  • Keep the wax free of matches, wick trimmings, or other debris.

Wick Care

  • Before each lighting, trim cotton wicks to approximately 1/4 inch and wooden wicks to 1/8–3/16 inch.
  • If the flame is too high or flickering, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool, trim the wick slightly, and relight.
  • If the flame looks weak, gently remove any loose, charred wood at the top of the wick once the candle is completely cool, then relight.

Burn Recommendations

  • For the best experience, burn your candle for no longer than 3 hours at a time.
  • Allow the candle to cool for at least 2 hours before trimming the wick and relighting.
  • Stop burning when approximately ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. This helps protect the container and the surface beneath it.

Safety Recommendations

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep candles away from children, pets, and any flammable materials such as curtains, books, or dried florals.
  • Do not move or touch the candle while it is burning or while the wax is still liquid.
  • Avoid placing candles directly under shelves, cabinets, or other overhead surfaces.
  • Do not burn your candle if the glass is cracked, chipped, or damaged in any way.

Extinguishing Your Candle

  • Use a snuffer or gently blow out the flame to extinguish the candle, taking care to avoid splashing wax.
  • Never use water to put out a candle, as this can cause hot wax to splatter and the glass to crack.
  • Wait until the wax has fully cooled and solidified before moving your candle.

Storage & Care Between Burns

  • Store your candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
  • If dust or particles collect on the surface between uses, gently wipe the top of the candle with a soft, dry cloth when the wax is fully cool.
  • After it has completely cooled, replace the lid on your candle (if it has one) between burns to help preserve the scent.

Each candle is crafted with care to bring a bit of stillness and nature-inspired beauty into your home. A few small care habits can turn every burn into a calm and reliable ritual. If you have questions about candle care, you’re always welcome to reach out: support@coleewilkinson.com.
